Category 1: Action Shots
This one is probably the hardest to shoot but also the most fun. You are basically trying to freeze a moment that happens in like a fraction of a second. A punch landing, a takedown, someone getting thrown. If your timing is off even a little the shot is ruined. Phone cameras actually do okay for this if the lighting is decent. Gym lighting is usually terrible though so if you can shoot at an outdoor event or a well lit venue that helps a lot. Just get as close as you can and keep shooting.
Category 2: Fighter Portraits
This category is less about action and more about the person. Think shots of a fighter wrapping their hands before a match, someone sitting in the corner between rounds, or just a good closeup of a fighter's face before they compete. You do not need anyone to be doing anything crazy for this one. Some of the best martial arts photos are just quiet moments that most people miss because they are waiting for the action. If you train you probably already know what those moments look like.
Category 3: Competition and Events
This is more about the whole event than any one moment. Wide shots of the venue, the crowd going crazy after a finish, the ref raising someone's hand, corner guys coaching between rounds. If you have ever been to a local tournament or even just a big open mat you know there is a lot going on that most people do not pay attention to. That is what this category is for. You do not need ringside access, some good event shots have come from up in the stands.
